Torsion vs. extension springs — and why they break
Torsion springs mount horizontally above the door and twist to lift its weight. They're on almost every modern residential and overhead door because they last longer and balance the door more precisely. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side and stretch as the door closes — common on older homes and lighter one-piece doors.
Springs break for three reasons: cycle count (a standard 10,000-cycle spring wears out in 5–7 years of daily use), weather (Carolina humidity swings and winter cold snaps make steel brittle), and rust or poor lubrication. What to look and listen for
- Door won't open at all. The opener hums or clicks but the door barely lifts an inch — the motor isn't strong enough to raise the door without the spring's help.
- Loud bang before the failure. Homeowners often describe it as a gunshot or firecracker from the garage. That's the spring snapping under tension.
- Door looks crooked or uneven. One side sags lower than the other, or the door tilts in the tracks. Common with dual-spring doors when only one has failed.
- Door feels extremely heavy by hand. With the opener disconnected, a balanced door should lift with two fingers. If it feels like dead weight, the spring is done.
- Visible gap in the spring coil. Look above the door — if you see a 2- to 3-inch separation in what should be a tight coil, that's the break point.
- Opener straining or reversing. Modern openers detect the extra load and shut down to protect themselves. Repeated reversals mean the spring can no longer carry the door.
