Garage Door Spring Replacement Cost: What to Expect

A broken garage door spring is the single most common failure we see in Charlotte — usually announced by a loud bang and a door that won't budge. Expect to spend $300–$500 for a single torsion spring or $400–$700 for a pair, installed. Here's what actually drives the number, and when you should push for the pair.

Torsion vs. extension springs

There are two spring systems used on residential doors, and they price differently:

• Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door opening. They're the modern standard, safer under load, and last 10,000–20,000 cycles. Replacement runs $300–$500 single or $400–$700 for a pair.
• Extension springs stretch along the horizontal track on each side. They're older technology, common on doors built before 2005, and require safety cables to prevent injury if one snaps. Pair replacement runs $300–$400.

Why we recommend replacing both springs at once

On a two-spring system, both springs wear at the same rate — they've completed the same number of cycles. If one snaps today, the other is statistically weeks or months from doing the same. Replacing the pair together avoids a second service call ($100 diagnostic fee, another trip charge), and the incremental cost of the second spring is usually $100–$200, not another full repair.

What determines the exact price?

1. Wire gauge and length. Heavier doors need thicker, longer springs. A 16-footer with an insulated door uses .250"+ wire; a builder-grade 8' single might use .207". Parts cost differs materially.
2. Spring life rating. Standard springs are rated ~10,000 cycles (7–9 years for most families). High-cycle springs at 20,000+ cycles cost $100 more per pair and typically last twice as long.
3. Related parts. Cables, bearings, or the center bracket often need replacement at the same time on doors 10+ years old. We identify these upfront so the quote is firm.
4. Timing. After-hours emergency dispatch adds $100. Same-day scheduled service is standard rate.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We strongly recommend against it. A torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury if it releases unexpectedly — this is why licensed door companies exist. The parts cost $100 at a big-box store, but the winding bars, cones, and technique required to safely tension the spring make this a professional job. Every year we replace springs installed incorrectly by DIY attempts.

How long does the repair take?

A standard torsion spring pair replacement takes 45–75 minutes on-site once we're there. Extension springs run about the same. If cables need replacement too, add 20–30 minutes.
